      Hi Everyone–

First, let me say that I am so glad I’m not the only one experiencing this. I have spent more money than I have, three times over. I have washed and rewashed everything in my apartment about five times. Today when the pest control person came and did not find bed bugs (again), we started talking about what it could be and he mentioned bird mites. We thought back–when his company treated my apartment, I put my plants outside and guess what–there was a mourning dove nest in one of the pillars on my patio. Family members have visited and no bites. I was starting to think I was crazy. Does the dehumidifier really work, and how long does it take? What are some routines I can use to manage this until it starts to get better.

Hi I was wondering if you have figured anything out that helps with sleeping? I am also having problems sleeping. Half of the problem is getting bitten at night, and the other half is my fear of it happening, which keeps me awake.

      Any advice would be appreciated!!

Before I go to sleep I shower with sulfur soap, then rub in witch hazel oil. I also keep a dehumidifier in my bedroom set very low, to 30% humidity. I find this routine definitely helps.

I wish i would have known these things when i first had it. Sadly after 8 yrs, they’ve returned, due to an abandoned nest near my air conditioner. I can say, that even though the crawling, stinging, burning sensation has returned, i know how to handle them, and am confident they will be gone soon. As i write, i haven’t felt any activity all day, so i know i am getting rid of them soon, not like the 2 yrs it took the first time. Please contact me if you want tips, cause they do work

Joyce, you’re not alone with this. It’s such a pain, and as I’ve been fighting them for months (as a bird owner) I understand what do you feel.

First thing you were supposed to do was take all your clothes off (socks/jacket/shoes/etc), put them in a plastic bag, seal them and throw them away. Then, take a HOT shower for about half hour. If will help you to relax as well.
Sleep naked in a white blanket and rest until the next day.
Keep in mind that you Should NOT USE YOUR WASHER OR DRYER TO CLEAN THOSE CLOTHES. You have to throw them away.

Please, have a look at post by CNDN Girl here: https://www.birdmites.org/forums/topic/strategies-for-making-it-through-each-night/
      It might help you, Carabear.

What has helped me is this: I sleep in a spare bedroom that has nothing in it except my bed. I bought one of those folding metal frames and a tri fold mattress on Amazon and encased the mattress. I don’t go in there except to sleep and its right after my shower. In the morning when I wake up I take the sheets and blankets off and put them in a garage bag and put it in the freezer for a few days before washing. Then I spray the bed mattress (underneath too, thats what the folding mattress helps with), frame and floor underneath with Lysol. I spray the walls about every few days. I spray my pillow with 190 proof vodka and put it in a garage bag. It will be evaporated by bedtime. After my bath I do nothing except go straight to bed. This is very important. I very seldom get bit at night with this
      routine.

One more thing. I don’t make the bed up with clean sheets until I am ready for bed. That keeps me out of the room until sleep time. I also taped the legs of the bed with double sided tape. I also don’t have the bed against the wall.

  • Even if you decide not to use them, you get free professional advice.
  • Most pest control companies have never dealt with bird mites before. You need to use a bird mite specialist.

Keep in mind that if bird mites are not treated correctly, even if the correct chemicals are used, they can become resistant to those chemicals. Don’t use a pest control company unless they have extensive experience treating bird mites.
