Hello and thank you so much for this website!! I am going on my 3rd week of bird mite infestation, and I’d like to share 3 things I discovered.

First, by dragging and applying pressure with a handheld bug zapper to my carpeting, bedding, and cloth furniture, I can quickly kill many mites in one swoop. I have only noticed a very faint fading on my microfiber comforter on the areas where I zapped, but I haven’t seen any damage to my microfiber sofa, or to any other items I’ve zapped.

The second thing I learned from using the zapper is that while I was running my 3rd floor bedroom window air conditioner (as many mite eradication sites suggest doing, so as to lower the humidity level), when I held up the bug zapper in front of the running air conditioner, I was killing several mites per second! As it turns out, my AC was sucking the mites right through the AC filter and directly into my bedroom. I immediately sealed the entire window in plastic, and this has greatly reduced the number of mites in my bedroom.

Third, up until that discovery, I assumed that the cause of our bird mite infestation was the nest on our front porch. But since learning that so many mites were coming in from the 3rd floor AC, it told me we must also have another nest, either on, in or near the roof, something we hadn’t previously suspected.

Here is the bug zapper I use on Amazon.

Recommended Treatment Provider

We recommend you use a licensed professional to address a bird mite problem. Don’t wait or the problem will get much worse and more expensive to treat. We have a list of pest control companies that are specifically qualified to treat bird mites.

  • They come to your house for no charge and give a free estimate.
  • Even if you decide not to use them, you get free professional advice.
  • Most pest control companies have never dealt with bird mites before. You need to use a bird mite specialist.

Follow this link to find a Qualified Local Exterminator near you.

Keep in mind that if bird mites are not treated correctly, even if the correct chemicals are used, they can become resistant to those chemicals. Don’t use a pest control company unless they have extensive experience treating bird mites.

Also, many of our readers have followed up with (or used outright) natural solutions and pesticide-free, such as on our Treatments Protocols page Follow this link to that page.

Natural and DIY Solutions

In addition to local exterminators, we offer a list of other natural, non-pesticide and/or do-it-yourself products that we have found helpful on our Treatments Protocol page.  Follow this link to the Treatments Protocols page.
