We have had the unfortunate experience of dealing with bird mites for the first (and hopefully last) time. We were getting eaten alive for the past couple of months and assumed at first it was fleas – but after two different flea medications (and not seeing a single flea on our dog or cat or in our home), we were starting to go crazy. Finally I spotted the smallest bug crawling on me, I grabbed a piece of tape, then grabbed my macro lens and got the best (but still crappy) pic. I was told on two different websites that they were parasitic mites and I figured out they were from the birds that had nested in our attic.

Anyway, the point of my message is this: I called several different exterminators and asked if they had experience with bird mites and went with one who said they had experience. They came today and sprayed the inside and outside of the house and fogged the attic. When I asked if they were going to remove the nest they said it wasn’t necessary. This seems odd since I everything I read said that the first thing to do is to remove the nest. I figured that you guys are the experts so I wanted to see what you had to say since I have a 30 day guarantee and I’d like to get them to do the job properly if the nest needs to be removed.

Thanks so much for this website. It’s been a great resource during these stressful weeks since we found out that bird mites were our issue.

Has your infestation cleared up? I am curious as we are one week in approximately. It took a couple days after the birds left the nest for me to realize what was happening. I had an exterminator there to spray inside and outside the following Monday as it was a weekend (longest most miserable weekend ever). I have been washing, vacuuming, laundering, etc daily and have not seen anything crawling for a few days now however I keep seeing the itty bitty spots randomly show up and then I take pictures and zoom in to see if they are mites and they usually are but seem to be dead. Today, however, is a particularly itchy day so now I am starting to wonder again. UGH. Anyway, I am curious how your battle has played out. Also, I am in MN and it was a robins nest. I dont know if that makes any difference or not. I am also worried about my dog and trying to keep a close eye on him.

Had 2 different exterminators, both claimed to be experts with bird mites, first laid glue traps and concluded there was only lint in them, no problem. Second charged us $2500 to get whole house sprayed, and after being told to not enter until 6 hrs later, i experienced the worst bites ever. It had only made them mad, not killed them. After much research, i learned, products that contained ENZYMES, is what kills them. I found great success with Kleen Green and TweetMint. I also used edible DE and took 1000mg of MSM.

  • They come to your house for no charge and give a free estimate.
  • Even if you decide not to use them, you get free professional advice.
  • Most pest control companies have never dealt with bird mites before. You need to use a bird mite specialist.

Follow this link to find a Qualified Local Exterminator near you.

Keep in mind that if bird mites are not treated correctly, even if the correct chemicals are used, they can become resistant to those chemicals. Don’t use a pest control company unless they have extensive experience treating bird mites.

Also, many of our readers have followed up with (or used outright) natural solutions and pesticide-free, such as on our Treatments Protocols page Follow this link to that page.
