My problems began in October 2017. My boyfriend of 5 years walked out on me & I was devastated. Not long afterward I had a brown patch on my scalp about 2 inches long, maybe a half-inch wide. It inched a bit but not that much, it was scaly & unsightly so I wanted it gone. I tried dandruff shampoo but it didn’t help. I literally washed my very long hair many hours every day. I began to think it was in the water. My ex is a plumber & he got offended when I stated that theory. I guess it doesn’t matter because no matter what I did it only got worse. I thought it was a scalp fungus, ringworm maybe. I searched online relentlessly. I couldn’t get to a dermatologist because I have no car, no $. One night my chest got so tight I called an ambulance. This was 2 years! after I found the spot on my head. I live in La. on the water. It is humid, hot, itchy from mosquitos. My tented house was extremely old with cracks & gaps, in fact, it had nice & had been treated for termites in 2016. I watched my scalp grow weird black balls all over, I cut my long hair off & was instantly unrecognizable. My hair is all white & I saw greenish scalp, skin, even hair. I tried to get rid of it, that made it spread worse & worse. At the ER I was sent none only to go to a different one the next night I couldn’t breathe & was terrified. It got better when I went outside but I was still shaky & my lips were numb. They didn’t even check my scalp I was placed in the psych ward on orders from the 1st ER the night before. They said I had dandruff! I thought it was mold but they saw nothing. I got out after 3 long days. My scalp was almost clear & my swollen finger joints began to look normal. Once home, 2 days later it was all back. I constantly cleaned, threw away blankets & clothes, shoes…in the hospital I wore paper scrubs & my phone & belongings were separated from me. I began looking up parasites & decided it was hookworms because it felt like staples held my hair down & these apparently make tunnels on your head. It felt like croquet hooks, tightly hammered together. I was given Medicaid from the hospital visits so went to a dermatologist who tried meds that didn’t help. Then I thought, Demodex mites because I’d had Rosacea on & off for decades. No treatment as I hadn’t gone to dr again but I also considered scabies. I mixed up borax & vinegar with water, sprayed it on the floor, couch, my head & body! It helped some but not eradicated at all. Still I felt a tiny ray of hope. Today I typed ‘Tiny Black Bugs on scalp in house’ on an image search site & saw the exact photos like I’d taken & zoomed in on! And found people with similar stories! This is horrible everything I have is covered with fine yellow, green (after getting wet), dark blue-black powder it’s in my chest, throat and all over. I have clothes in my refrigerator. Washing my hair makes it get into the air, it’s on the walls, dishes, pots & pans, the 14 ft ceiling! I have a grandson I’ve never seen he”ll be a year in July nor have I seen my daughter who is pregnant with the 2nd baby. They live 90 minutes away. I’ve quarantined myself 2 1/2 yrs now this Covid thing has people doing what I was forced to for years & still no end in sight. My ex pays my rent he never believed me, things ate weird with the landlord if he believes me he won’t admit it, CYA! He moved me to an apartment away from the house, its larger & I’ve been here 6 months and the mites traveled along, better at 1st now worse than ever. I see yellow on my mattress pad & blue, tiny black balls all over the floors, it’s a nightmare! I can’t even complain no one wants to listen. I can’t afford an exterminator& my ex looks mean when I ask for anything extra. No parents or family but my 2 children. They’re struggling too. I’m only venting I’m sorry if is annoying, I’m excited to find this forum & people who get it! I don’t know if I’ll ever banish them I hope so, I get such bad headaches, it even gets on my food, in my drinks as soon as the air gets to it. My face & lips stay numb. I’m here to learn. I am going to try to get a vacuum. I’m disabled, recently got SSI my ex got the $ I don’t even have a bank account. He pays my rent, utilities, brings my food & med. He knew I had nothing when he got with me so it was the park bench or Jim helping. Education doesn’t matter I’ve found no one believes me, from high school diploma to PhD to a veterinarian! It feels hopeless. Looking at the chart Scabies vs. Bird mites this is the ONLY list that has described my problem. I see it being difficult if not impossible to be free of them. I have severe arthritis & joint problems so I can’t walk much or stand much, difficult for an OCD person who appears dirty all the time now. I won’t complain generally but felt I should explain my inability to buy much. Thank you for reading. 🙂

  • They come to your house for no charge and give a free estimate.
  • Even if you decide not to use them, you get free professional advice.
  • Most pest control companies have never dealt with bird mites before. You need to use a bird mite specialist.

Follow this link to find a Qualified Local Exterminator near you.

Keep in mind that if bird mites are not treated correctly, even if the correct chemicals are used, they can become resistant to those chemicals. Don’t use a pest control company unless they have extensive experience treating bird mites.

Also, many of our readers have followed up with (or used outright) natural solutions and pesticide-free, such as on our Treatments Protocols page Follow this link to that page.
