      Hi,

We live in Honolulu and have bird mites in our house. About 2 months ago, we believe a bird nest around one of our air ducts in the attic was vacated and the mites started coming inside.

We had a pesticide company come in and spray upstairs (we have two story house) 3 weeks ago, but there is still a problem. In the past, most of our family of four had bites when we were upstairs. Now it’s mostly itching for myself and my two kids, but my wife has it the worst with biting and also itching constantly. It’s in her clothes and she is about at her wit’s end.

Two members of my family have moved downstairs, but now it seems the mites have traveled downstairs too. My wife laid bug powder down all over the house, and I don’t know if the mites have used that as a path to go downstairs. We’ve used Windex and other chemical sprays. My wife puts hydrogen peroxide on her skin. I use hand sanitizer. We’re wondering if by attacking them we’ve riled them up and gotten them active.

It seems like they are still in our clothes as well, and washing them does not necessarily seem to be the answer.

Does anyone have some solutions for us for full eradication? We are looking into using Wondercide in a fogger, and wondering if it works.

Any input or help would be appreciated.

      Thank you,

      Will L.

Use ammonia with water to wash your floors and walls daily, buy a dehumidifier (or two if you have a big house), wash your bathroom with 75% alcohol daily. Vacuum like crazy everyday, your house and your vehicle. Wash your laundry with a cup of ammonia and Borax with every load. Buy bed bug proof zippered mattress covers.

Mites die in the cold so you might want to put your precious books and paperwork in the freezer for a few days, and get rid of the paper stuff you don’t need. They love paper!

Use undiluted Neem oil for your body or Nustock (cut with Aveeno or other type of lotion) and then drink colloidal silver or structured silver. Good luck.

Read my story for more details. When we had them, we tried many things. My sister tried the foggers, pest control people and nothing worked. What worked was hard work, persistence and the things I listed above.

Recommended Treatment Provider

We recommend you use a licensed professional to address a bird mite problem. Don’t wait or the problem will get much worse and more expensive to treat. We have a list of pest control companies that are specifically qualified to treat bird mites.

  • They come to your house for no charge and give a free estimate.
  • Even if you decide not to use them, you get free professional advice.
  • Most pest control companies have never dealt with bird mites before. You need to use a bird mite specialist.

Follow this link to find a Qualified Local Exterminator near you.

Keep in mind that if bird mites are not treated correctly, even if the correct chemicals are used, they can become resistant to those chemicals. Don’t use a pest control company unless they have extensive experience treating bird mites.

Also, many of our readers have followed up with (or used outright) natural solutions and pesticide-free, such as on our Treatments Protocols page Follow this link to that page.
